Physical Education and Health Department

At San Juan Hills High School we strive to develop your child into a well-rounded and prepared adult.  As the Physical Education Department, our role in this development is creating a physically educated student with the knowledge base and knows how to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our Physical Education classes involve stretching, calisthenics, fitness concepts, sports, and preparation for the California Fitnessgram Test.  Students are required to take two years of Physical Education or Sports Activities in order to graduate high school. PE 9 - Course Description

PE 9 - Course Description

PE 9 Activities is a one-year, required course for all 9th graders who are not participating in a team sport, dance, cheerleading, marching band, or band auxiliary. PE 9 focuses on improving the fitness level of each student and preparing them to pass the Physical Fitness Test given in March /April. Students must pass 5 of the following 6 tests:   
 
- 1 mile run
- Push ups
- Sit ups
- Trunk lift
- Sit and reach
- Body composition  
 
To accomplish these goals, students work each day to build muscular and cardiovascular endurance as well as flexibility. Students also develop sports related skills through units such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, kickball, ultimate Frisbee, and tennis. If a student does not pass PE 9, he or she must repeat the semester in 10th grade before being able to take a PE elective.

Physical Education Activities course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and maintain an active lifestyle throughout their lifetime.  Students will learn how they can achieve a high level of physical fitness by understanding key concepts of health-related fitness and skills-related fitness.  Health-related fitness concepts such as cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility will be integrated with skills-related concepts such as agility, coordination, balance, and speed.  Understanding and developing these skills will provide students with the knowledge base and confidence to participate in a wide-range of individual sports, team sports, outdoor activities, and recreational activities.

STRENGTH & EXERCISE - Course Description

Strength exercise class is offered as an elective physical education class for boys girls. The course includes instruction about the correct techniques of power lifting, Olympic lifting and body building. Flexibility, core and plyometrics as well as cardiovascular training will also be included in this very popular district wide class.   Whatever a weak muscle can do, a stronger, more powerful, more flexible muscle can do better!
YOGA - Course Description

YOGA - Course Description

Yoga is a 5,000 year old practice that improves strength, flexibility, and balance. In this course, students will learn more than 100 yoga poses and will practice them in a fluid, vinyasa style class which builds heat and strength in the body. Students will also learn about yoga’s health benefits, history, and philosophy. This year long course may be repeated for either PE or elective credit. BADMINTON - Course Description

BADMINTON - Course Description

Badminton is a sport in which light rackets are used to volley an object called a shuttlecock, shuttle, birdie, or bird back and forth over a high net. Unlike other similar sports, such as tennis, badminton is not played with a ball—the shuttlecock is a kind of feathered cone with a cork head. This year -long course may be repeated for either PE or elective credit. All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. This course is an intense physical education class focusing on the components of total fitness:  Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition. SOCCER - Course Description

Soccer is a sport played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball that may not be touched with the hands or arms during play except by the goalkeepers. The object of the game is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponents' goal. This year -long course may be repeated for either PE or elective credit. All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. This course is an intense physical education class focusing on the components of total fitness:  Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition. POWER WALKING

POWER WALKING

Power walking is an intense and strenuous class involving advanced walking techniques and hiking.  The beautiful off-campus trails around school are utilized and classes may cover up to 4 plus miles a class period. This year -long course may be repeated for either PE or elective credit. All levels of walkers from beginner to advanced are welcome. This course is an intense physical education class focusing on the components of total fitness:  Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition.
